Title
Design and Low-Cost Manufacturing Of High Purity MAX Powder
Abstract
Mn+1AXn (MAX; M = transition metal, A = group A element, X = C or N and n = 1, 2 or 3) phases, comprising over 150 different compositions, have undergone extensive investigation over the past 25 years. These materials demonstrate ceramic-like qualities such as high stiffness, temperature stability, and oxidation resistance, while also exhibiting metallic characteristics like electrical conductivity, thermal shock resistance, and machinability. The distinctive properties of MAX phases make them suitable for challenging environments, such as turbine blades, offering the potential for significantly improved efficiencies and enhanced power generation from finite fossil fuel resources. In the realm of renewable energy, the efficiency of Stirling engines, for instance, could greatly benefit from the use of MAX phase pistons and cylinders. This is attributed to the material's low friction, oxidation-resistant nature, and ease of machining. In this Phase 1 proposal, Vuronyx Technologies will collaborate with Prof Surojit Gupta at University of North Dakota (UND) to develop an efficient process for the synthesis of MAX powder. At UND, Prof. Guptaĺs group has developed novel manufacturing processes for manufacturing MAX powders by using biomass-based precursors which can replace critical materials like graphite during the manufacturing process. The process will be complemented by salt encapsulation manufacturing method pioneered in Dr. Guptaĺs lab which will replace Argon atmosphere with oxidative environment thus lowering the cost of production. Dr. Guptaĺs group will collaborate with Vuronyx Technologies to further accelerate the commercialization of the technology. In Phase 1, Vuronyx Technologies will scale up the process and demonstrate the process for critical applications.
