Title
Variable Speed Electrically Powered Compact PTO
Abstract
Statement of the problem or situation that is being addressed The commercial market is targeting net-zero emissions to reduce our carbon footprint and reverse global climate change. In California, manufacturers of cab and chassis or complete vehicles will be required to sell zero-emission truck/chassis for 55% of Class 2bľ3 truck sales and 75% of Class 4ľ8 straight truck sales by 2035. Currently, commercial mechanical drive systems are used for the medium- and heavy-duty truck market for vehicle body builders to convert cab and chassis platforms to create bucket trucks, garbage trucks, tow trucks, dump trucks, and others. All which are supplied power by a spinning power take off (PTO) shaft using the main powertrain engine for body power needs. An electrically driven PTO is needed for trucks with electrified powertrains to seamlessly allow vehicle body builders to continue mounting truck bodies originally designed for mechanical PTO systems on trucks with electric powertrains. Statement of how this problem or situation is being addressed Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) meet the needs for range, stationary run time, and required service intervals while meeting net-zero emissions; however, production units are not in the marketplace. Mainstream Engineering proposes a variable speed PTO solution using a purpose-designed highly efficient electric motor, controller, and cooling system packaged as a bolt-in unit using FCEV electrical power. The output is configured in a standard SAE B size PTO drive system to power the plethora of accessories currently on the market. When packaged with a hydraulic pump it will support the largest medium-duty bucket truck. What is to be done in Phase I Our initial design supports 10 kW of shaft power from 0-1400 rpm in an 8öx7öx7ö package to support medium-duty truck hydraulic needs. In Phase I, we will optimize the motor and drive system for size weight and power. A passive cooling system for continuous operation when mounted under a truck will be integrated with package. The system will be computational analyzed and a hydraulic pump feedback system will be tested. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits Fuel cell electric vehicles will eliminate harmful tailpipe emissions, contributing to improved air quality and reduction in our reliance on fossil fuels while reducing noise emissions and increase efficiency. Their introduction will require changes for vehicle body builders who rely on exported mechanical chassis to run their equipment. Introducing the electric PTO will allow seamless transition from fossil fueled engines to electric vehicles.
