Title
Radiation-Hardened Robotics for Inspection of Reactor Systems within the Biological Shield
Abstract
Commercial nuclear reactor operators do not currently have the capability to visually monitor reactor systems within the biological shield while the reactor is operating at or near full capacity. The radiation levels and harsh temperature and environmental conditions encountered close to the reactor within the primary biological shield prohibit the use of current commercially available robotics. Vega Wave Systems, Inc. has developed an advanced, ultra-radiation-hardened vision system for the nuclear industry capable of withstanding more than two orders of magnitude more radiation than the maximum encountered during the nuclear power plant operation and refueling. Under this program, Vega Wave Systems will design and/or adapt a robot using the camera to withstand the harsh radiation environment in close proximity to the reactor systems for maintenance and inspection within the biological shield. This development would significantly enhance the safety and operational efficiency of advanced nuclear facilities and the current United States commercial nuclear reactor fleet. Commercial Applications: The robotic vision system developed in this program will enable improved inspection and visual verification of the operation of nuclear power plants. This will also be useful improved inspection of remote handling of radioactive materials for nuclear physics, spent fuel, and nuclear accident sites.
