Title
Autonomous Technologies for Optimized Mapping and Intelligent Characterization of Radiological Sources
Abstract
Multi-agent, multi-sensor autonomous platforms represent a significant advancement in technology with numerous benefits for society. By leveraging a network of interconnected agents and sensors, these platforms offer enhanced capabilities for tasks ranging from homeland security and port monitoring to emergency response and industrial monitoring, such as at nuclear power plants. The overall goal of this SBIR effort is to develop an advanced, autonomous, robot-based, multi-sensor, radiological search and detection capability that will streamline radiation hazard and threat detection, identification, and assessment for applications ranging from homeland security to emergency response. Phase I will focus on the development of an initial single-agent, autonomous search capability. Existing commercial 3D radiation mapping systems and robotic platforms will be leveraged to accelerate development. In Phase II, the initial capability will be extended towards multi-agent autonomy, coordinating the actions of different robotic agents, both aerial and ground-based, with varying capabilities. There are significant commercial opportunities to implement the proposed capabilities to benefit multiple industries. Multi-agent, multi-sensor autonomous platforms for radiological search offer rapid detection and response to radiological threats, safeguarding public health and security. By deploying autonomous systems equipped with radiation sensors, these platforms efficiently survey large areas, enabling swift identification of potential hazards. Real-time data sharing and decision-making facilitate coordinated responses to emergent threats, crucial in radiological emergencies. Minimizing human exposure to radiation, they automate hazardous tasks, enhancing safety. Overall, these platforms bolster national security efforts, protect critical infrastructure, and contribute to a more secure and resilient society. Summary for Members of Congress: This SBIR effort focuses on creating an autonomous, multi-sensor, robot-based system for radiological search and detection, offering immense benefits across applications such as homeland security, emergency response, and industrial monitoring, including nuclear power plants. By leveraging commercially available technologies, it promises significant advancements in safety, efficiency, and threat detection across various industries and hazardous environments.
