Title
Development Of Novel Light-Activated Process For Bio-Acetic Acid Production
Abstract
Statement of the Problem: New Iridium is dedicated to addressing the critical need for sustainable solutions in chemical manufacturing, with a specific focus on bio-acetic acid production. Bio-acetic acid serves as a key component in the production of bio-materials like PEVA and PVA, essential in numerous industrial and consumer applications such as adhesives, coatings, and foams. Using advanced light-driven photocatalytic technology, our project develops a sustainable low-carbon and economically viable method for bio-acetic acid production, using bio-ethanol feedstock derived from cellulosic biomass and waste gas. Our fully electrified solution reduces greenhouse gas emissions by over 110% vs. todayĺs methods, surpassing the 70% benchmark set by the Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), and has the potential to mitigate more than 5 million metric tons (Mt) of CO2 annually in the U.S. and 25 Mt globally. Phase I Project Objectives: The project advances our innovative light-driven process through three primary objectives: Developing a 5 metric ton/year (t/y) photoreactor as the initial step toward scaling up production (Aim 1). Transitioning from batch operations to a continuous flow model for enhanced efficiency and scalability (Aim 2). Identifying flammability risks and developing monitoring strategies to ensure safe processing and avoid potential hazards (Aim 3). Phase I Project Activities: Development of Photoreactor: Aimed at designing and fabricating a state-of-the-art 5 t/y bubble column photoreactor, capable of harnessing light energy to drive the conversion of bio-ethanol to bio-acetic acid. Transition to Continuous Processing: To enhance efficiency and scalability, the project will transition from batch to continuous flow processing, streamlining operations and optimizing productivity. By fine-tuning process parameters and implementing advanced monitoring and control systems, stable continuous operation for extended durations will be achieved. Safety and Risk Management: In collaboration with risk management experts for chemical processes at AVN Corp, potential safety hazards associated with photoreactor operations will be identified and mitigated. Through implementation of flammability detection and monitoring strategies, the safety and reliability of the production process will be validated. Commercial Applications and Benefits: The successful completion of Phase I will pave the way for Phase II (scaling to a 50 t/y pilot plant) and beyond, enabling the commercialization of bio-acetic acid production technology at commercial scale. This project promises to boost economic activity throughout the bio-acetic acid supply chain, reducing local industrial waste. It will also promote environmental equity, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth, especially in rural areas. By introducing bio-based materials, it supports biomass utilization, reducing GHG emissions and aligning with BETO's mission.
