Title
Automated Debris Passage for Micro-Hydropower
Abstract
There is a considerable amount of available, but so far generally unused energy in rivers, streams and man-made channels, particularly at very low heads of less than 10ĺ. One critical issue for these systems is the need for regular removal of debris that accumulates over time on the turbine components. This proposal seeks to develop an automated debris removal system incorporated in the turbine stator. It consists of an apparatus designed to clear debris from the turbine vanes. The system will be automatically activated when a drop in output is detected by appropriate sensing of the electric power from the generator. The integration with the stator can be achieved by leveraging 3D manufacturing of both the turbine components and the debris removal system. Cadens is developing modular, scalable turbine/generator systems for microhydro (5kW to 100kW), using 3D printing as a way to inexpensively manufacture the turbine and conveyance systems. This project addresses the most critical maintenance issue, thus removing a major obstacle to the deployment of this renewable energy resource. Cadensĺ system, further refined in Phase II, is expected to be aimed at small dams, especially those in need of refurbishing, as well as man-made systems (water conveyance plants, water-intensive industries, etc).
