Cooperative Agreement

Overview

Grant Description
This project will bring the recipients expertise in architecture and operation of storage-integrated microgrids for maximum community benefit alongside promising new vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) products.

This integration of capability will solidify a best-in-class, commercial and industrial (C&I) scale VRFB product;

establish significant cost reductions by establishing new vertically integrated electrolyte production and stack automation manufacturing processes;

and develop promising new monetization models for long duration energy storage (LDES) built around stacked services models that can include arbitrage and peak demand management to reduce rate tariff costs, improve long-term community resilience, and generate energy sellback revenue for applications such as demand response and wholesale energy trading.
Funding Goals
THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY’S (DOE’S) NATIONAL ENERGY TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY (NETL), ON BEHALF OF THE OFFICE OF ELECTRICITY (OE), IS RELEASING A FUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT (FOA) TO SOLICIT APPLICATIONS FOR INNOVATIVE LONG DURATION ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM (ESS) DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS THAT ADVANCE A TECHNOLOGY TOWARDS COMMERCIALIZATION AND VALIDATE ITS COST AND PERFORMANCE IN THE FIELD TO THE ENERGY STAKEHOLDER COMMUNITY. THESE DEMONSTRATIONS WILL CONTRIBUTE DATA TO THE NATIONAL LAB LED RAPID OPERATIONAL VALIDATION INITIATIVE (ROVI) IN ORDER TO UNLOCK INSIGHTS ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE OF THESE SYSTEMS THAT WILL ACCELERATE THE TESTING AND VALIDATION PROCESS FOR EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES.
