Overview
Grant Description
Norfolk State University
Project Title: Consortium for Research and Education in Materials Science and Photonics Engineering
Project Description: In accordance with the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) DE-FOA-0002144 and the needs of the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE), the key objectives of the consortium are to:
• Strengthen the research and education capabilities of Norfolk State University (NSU), Virginia State University (VSU), and Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) in the research areas of materials science and photonics, which are the topics of interest to the NSE, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and National Ignition Facility (NIF).
• Recruit and prepare talented students at NSU, VSU, and ECSU to excel in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by providing them with career-readiness skills, fundamental knowledge, practical experience, and training through applicable cutting-edge research projects, capacity building, and experiential learning.
• Enlarge the fundamental scientific and technical knowledge and resource base in the topic areas of materials science and photonic engineering (such as controlling light-matter interaction with metamaterials), which are of interest to LLNL and NIF.
These objectives will be achieved via:
(I) Formal and informal education and training of the minority students recruited to participate in the program.
(II) Students' internships at LLNL.
(III) Involving students in cutting-edge research at LLNL and home institutions.
