MIDLAND UNDERGROUND LABORATORY FOR TESTING IMPROVED PRODUCTION IN UNCONVENTIONAL RESERVOIRS PLUS ORGANIC-ROCK STORAGE EFFICIENCY OF CARBON DIOXIDE (MULTIPURPOSE CO2)
THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP AN INTEGRATED FIELD LABORATORY STUDY IN MIDLAND BASIN THAT IS SUPPORTED BY LABORATORY EXPERIMENT AND COMPUTER SIMULATION TO ADDRESS THE KNOWLEDGE GAPS, EXPLORE THE FEASIBILITY OF THE TECHNIQUES, DEVELOP OPTIMAL STRATEGIES ON INJECTION, CONFORMANCE CONTROL, AND MONITORING, WITH THE TWO-FOLD OBJECTIVES OF REDUCED CARBON FOOTPRINT INCREMENTAL OIL RECOVERY AND TESTING FEASIBILITY OF CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) STORAGE IN DEPLETED UNCONVENTIONAL RESERVOIRS.

THE RESEARCH APPLICATIONS SOLICITED BY THIS FUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT (DE-FOA-0003015) MUST FOCUS ON THE INJECTION OF A SIGNIFICANT QUANTITY CO2 INTO THE SUBSURFACE VIA A HORIZONTAL, HYDRAULICALLY FRACTURED WELL (OR WELLS) COMPLETED IN AN ACKNOWLEDGED UNCONVENTIONAL OIL PLAY WITH SIGNIFICANT PRODUCTION HISTORY AND GEOLOGIC CHARACTERIZATION, AND A COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION OF THE RESULTING EFFECT ON CRUDE OIL RECOVERY THROUGH “HUFF-N-PUFF” OR CONTINUOUS CO2 INJECTION.
