Overview

Grant Description
Through the design and implementation of the proposed Solar-Geothermal District Heating and Cooling (SOL-GDHC) system, the project team expects to gain a greater understanding of the financial and environmental benefits of the SOL-GDHC system through real-time data collection in the demonstration community.

Documentation of the proposed system, its design, implementation, operation, verified performance characteristics, maintenance plan, and business model will provide a roadmap for future implementations of the SOL-GDHC system of various (larger and smaller) scales throughout the Midwest and other areas of the nation in similar geographic situations and environments.

Our overall project goal is to promote the SOL-GDHC system deployment in the U.S. by providing innovations in district geothermal system simulation, design, installation, operation, performance assessment, and workforce training.

The objectives in Budget Period I (BP1) (Planning and Design) are:
1) To identify optimal design and operation parameters through a simulation-based study.
2) To finalize the technical design of the proposed system, including
A. Full engineering feasibility and technical design for the SOL-GDHC system(s)
B. Technical, economic, and environmental assessment
C. Maintenance plan
D. Workforce transition or development and training plan, and
E. Permitting plan
3) To complete the BP1 report and continuation application.

Objectives in BP2 (Deployment) are:
1) To finalize as-built design, installation, and commission of the proposed system in the demonstration community.
2) To evaluate the performance of the SOL-GDHC system through data collection.
3) To implement the workforce development plan in CPN to operate and manage the geothermal system.
4) To disseminate the technology through publications and training workshops.
