Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
This project will research and develop new computational tools and designs for optimal operations of hybrid energy systems (Task 1). Test the tools and designs in an Accelerated Testing Laboratory (ATL) on the University of Vermont (UVM) campus (Task 2). Demonstrate them in the field at a Hybrid Solar Test Center (HSTC) for hybrid renewable power generation in northern climates that is co-located with an existing MW-scale wood-burning power plant in Burlington, VT (Task 3). And utilize the facilities to outreach to external industry and stakeholder groups (Task 4).
Funding Goals
TO DESIGN AND DEVELOP THE PROJECT’S ADVANCED HSTC DEMONSTRATION FACILITY REQUIRES PHYSICS-INFORMED AND
DATA-BASED COMPUTATIONAL TOOLS FOR HESS. TO DEVELOP THE DATA FOUNDATION, WE WILL LEVERAGE HARDWARE IN A
CONTROLLED LABORATORY SETTING TO ACCELERATE SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY AND ALGORITHMIC ADVANCES AND GATHER
DATA UNDER A VARIETY OF COMPONENT OPERATING CONDITIONS. THESE DATA WILL, IN PARALLEL, INFORM THE
DEVELOPMENT OF PHYSICS-BASED MODELS OF HESS TO ITERATIVELY IMPROVE THE CAPABILITY OF ADVANCED MODELING,
CONTROL, AND OPTIMIZATION TOOLS. THUS, THE PROJECT HAS FOUR TASKS:
T1. DEVELOP ADVANCED HES COMPUTATIONAL TOOLS
T2. LABORATORY TESTING AND DATA ANALYSIS AT ATL SITE ON UVM CAMPUS
T3. FIELD DEMONSTRATION AT HSTC SITE NEAR MCNEIL FACILITY
T4. OUTREACH TO NATIONAL ENERGY INDUSTRY AND LOCAL STAKEHOLDERS
