DECD0000136
Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
This project plans to replace deteriorating wooden transmission poles with galvanized steel poles,
hardening a combined 21 miles of transmission lines in Central North Carolina.
The counties in the project area face economic distress due to decreasing populations, aging infrastructure, energy burdens, and limited health, education, and employment opportunities.
Access to reliable, affordable, and resilient energy is critical to overcoming many of these challenges.
The existing poles have been damaged due to the impacts of wildlife and other natural hazards.
These upgrades aim to reduce outages, improve infrastructure durability and longevity, and maximize maintenance efficiency and safety.
The project also seeks to help to mitigate rate increases for disadvantaged communities.

Funding Goals
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
1. TRANSMISSION POLES REPLACEMENT. REPLACE ALL CREOSOTE-SOAKED WOOD POLES WITH GALVANIZED STEEL POLES FOR TWO ELECTRIC TRANSMISSION LINES SPANNING 21 MILES BETWEEN STALEY AND SNOW CAMP AND ETHER AND DOVER, IN RURAL NORTH CAROLINA.
2. COMMUNITY BENEFITS.
• INCREASE ENERGY RESILIENCY, RELIABILITY, CAPACITY, CAPABILITY, AND REDUCE POWER OUTAGES FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS BY INCREASING POLE RESILIENCY TO WILDLIFE (E.G.: WOODPECKERS) AND WEATHERIZING THE TRANSMISSION LINES.
• PROVIDE CONTRACTING AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES TO UNDERREPRESENTED SUPPLIERS, CONTRACTORS, AND WORKERS FOR PROJECT WORK.
• PROVIDE APPRENTICESHIP AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR LINEWORKERS.
• REDUCE ENERGY BURDEN TO CUSTOMERS, INCLUDING DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES, BY REDUCING ENERGY COSTS.
• ELIMINATE FURTHER RISK OF PCP (A CHEMICAL COMPOUND IN CREOSOTE) CONTACT AND ITS ASSOCIATED HEALTH IMPACTS FOR WORKERS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS, AND WILDLIFE.
