Grant Description
Texas A&M Agrilife Research New DE-FOA-0003405 – Teosynte Award

Control number: 3405-1507

Title: Developing field-deployable low N2O emission sorghum hybrids using biological nitrification inhibition and nitrogen fixation

This competitive cooperative agreement for a research and development project entitled, “Developing field-deployable low N2O emission sorghum hybrids using biological nitrification inhibition and nitrogen fixation” is awarded Texas A&M Agrilife Research under ARPA-E FOA number DE-FOA-0003405 (Technologies to emend and obviate synthetic nitrogen’s toll on emissions (TEOSYNTE)) and control 3405-1507.

The purpose of this award is to develop and market N2LOW sorghum hybrids with genetic traits to reduce N2O emissions, maintain high yields, and lower fertilizer application requirements.
Funding Goals
THE TECHNOLOGIES TO EMEND AND OBVIATE SYNTHETIC NITROGEN’S TOLL ON EMISSIONS (TEOSYNTE) PROGRAM AIMS TO LOWER NITROUS OXIDE (N2O) EMISSIONS FROM THE CULTIVATION OF CORN AND SORGHUM USED FOR UNITED STATES (U.S.) ETHANOL PRODUCTION BY 50%. THE PROGRAM WILL EMPHASIZE PLANT AND MICROBIAL BIO-DESIGN STRATEGIES THAT LOWER THE APPLICATION OF SYNTHETIC NITROGEN (N) FERTILIZER ON CORN AND SORGHUM FIELDS WHILE MAINTAINING CROP YIELDS AND REDUCING 50% OF N2O EMISSIONS.
