Cooperative Agreement
Overview
Grant Description
University of California, Berkeley- New Circuits Award.
Control Number: 1727-1612
Title: ''Enabling Ultra-Compact, Lightweight, Efficient, and Reliable 6.6 kW On-Board Bi-Directional Electric Vehicle Charger with Advanced Topology and Control''
Control Number: 1727-1612
Title: ''Enabling Ultra-Compact, Lightweight, Efficient, and Reliable 6.6 kW On-Board Bi-Directional Electric Vehicle Charger with Advanced Topology and Control''
Funding Goals
TO DEMONSTRATE HOW AN ADVANCED FLYING CAPACITOR MULTILEVEL CONVERTER TOPOLOGY LEVERAGING THE INHERENTLY HIGHER ENERGY DENSITY OF CAPACITORS WILL CATALYZE SIMULTANEOUS DISRUPTIVE IMPROVEMENTS FOR ALL FIGURES OF MERIT OF INTEREST TO ARPA-E’S CIRCUITS INITIATIVE, A 6.6 KW BI-DIRECTIONAL LEVEL 2 ON-BOARD EV CHARGER WILL BE CONSTRUCTED. BUILDING ON THE GENERALIZED FOUNDATIONAL ARCHITECTURE, THIS CHARGER CAN BE EITHER ISOLATED BY ATTACHING A HIGH FREQUENCY, RESONANT DC-DC CONVERTER OR NON-ISOLATED BY
CONNECTING A NOVEL IN-LINE BUFFER THAT IMPLEMENTS PARTIAL POWER PROCESSING FOR MAXIMIZED PERFORMANCE AND MINIMIZED LOSS. THIS PROPOSED RESEARCH EFFORT COMBINES NEXT-GENERATION CAPACITOR MATERIALS WITH CUTTING-EDGE CONTROL AND CIRCUIT TOPOLOGIES IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE DRAMATIC 15 TIMES GREATER IMPROVEMENTS IN POWER DENSITY FOR BOTH THE ISOLATED AND NON-ISOLATED REALIZATIONS OF THE CONVERTER COMPARED TO INDUSTRIAL STATE-OF-THE-ART AND GOVERNMENT TARGETS WILL BE ATTAINED WHILE MAINTAINING SUPERIOR EFFICIENCY, COST, AND EMI PERFORMANCE. THE DRAMATIC VOLUME AND WEIGHT SAVINGS OF THIS APPROACH WILL ENSURE U.S. EV MANUFACTURING COMPETITIVENESS WITH IMPROVEMENTS IN RANGE AND CHARGING TIME.
