Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
Prince Georges County Health Literacy Enhancement & Advancement Program (Health LEAP) - Prince George's County Health Department (PGCHD) seeks to implement health literacy interventions that will enhance equitable community responses to COVID-19 in urban Prince George's County, Maryland.
The project will target the 795,000 racial/ethnic minority residents who compose 85% of the county's population and who have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Many of these residents have limited English proficiency and/or are recent immigrants. The county has the highest number of COVID-19 cases; the second-highest mortality rate, and for most of the pandemic, the second-highest positivity rate in Maryland.
The desired outcomes are:
(1) Increase by 50% over baseline the proportion of adults whose healthcare provider checked their understanding of COVID-19.
(2) Decrease by 50% from baseline the proportion of adults who report poor communication about COVID-19 with their healthcare provider.
(3) Increase by 50% over baseline the proportion of adults whose healthcare providers involved them in decisions regarding COVID-19 testing and vaccination as much as they want.
(4) 75% increase over baseline in testing and vaccine uptake, respectively, among all PGC high-risk populations.
In partnership with community-based organizations, PGCHD will deploy community health workers to provide bilingual lay education on virus transmission, prevention, testing, and vaccination, and how to talk to providers about COVID. This effort will be supported by written materials in culturally, literacy-level, and linguistically appropriate language; bi-directional e-referral to testing, vaccination, primary care, and social support services; and a countywide social marketing campaign.
