Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Community project funding/Congressionally directed spending - construction - The Kita Center’s mission is to preventing suicide by building intentional environments to foster connections and a lifelong engagement with mental wellness.

The project represents an upstream initiative to address the mental health needs of suicide loss survivors and at-risk individuals in rural Maine.

Spanning a 28.5-acre property in Acton, Maine, the endeavor aims to establish a community mental wellness campus.

Central to the initiative is the construction of the Kita Commons building, meticulously designed to accommodate large groups for mental health training sessions, food service for the organization's programs, and facilitate year-round program expansions.

This versatile facility will offer flexible layouts, ample gathering space, and essential utilities, ensuring seamless functionality.

Complementing this, the project includes the construction of two group therapy cabins, providing a serene setting for mental health support programs.

These cabins foster an ideal environment for therapy sessions, promoting healing and connection.

Moreover, the endeavor encompasses the construction of a bathhouse, meeting recommended ratios for toilets per person.

To support these facilities, waste-water disposal systems and site lighting will be installed, enhancing safety and convenience for visitors.

The target population includes suicide loss survivors, at-risk youth, community members and organizations seeking community or connection, and individuals in need of mental wellness support services.

Through the initiatives, the Kita Center seeks to expand its capacity to provide upstream protective mental health solutions, integrating green spaces, community support, and professional services.

In addition to this mission and purpose, the campus will also be made available for community initiatives, school groups, mission and non-mission aligned organizations, local organizations such as the Pine Tree Council, Inc. Boy Scouts of America, and rentals to others for general purposes that do not otherwise interfere with the primary purpose of the award.

Rentals will support Kita's revenue, which in turn supports suicide prevention programs and the organization’s sustainability and expansion.

By addressing the critical need for postvention and suicide prevention efforts, the aim is to create a resilient and empowered community committed to mental wellness and community healing.
