Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
Application Purpose: This award aims to fund SunLine Transit Agencys FY 2024 capital projects from the FY 2022 Federal Section 5339 (c) Low No Emission Discretionary Program grant with reference ID#D2022-LWNO-021.
Activities performed: SunLine Transit intends to utilize the funds to purchase three (3) hydrogen fuel cell buses and upgrade its liquid hydrogen refueling station.
Expected outcomes: This project replaces 3 model year 2009 CNG buses with hydrogen fuel cell buses. The buses to be replaced are at the end of their useful lives. In addition, this project funds additional upgrades to SunLine's newest liquid hydrogen refueling station to be capable of dispensing 1500 kg/d. The critical factor at SunLine preventing increased procurement rates of FCEBs is refueling infrastructure. Each new dispenser at an LH2 station requires significant pump upgrades (or new pumps) to enable supply for that dispenser. This project helps address this need and allows SunLine to make hydrogen fuel available to other regional entities needing a fueling station.
Intended beneficiaries: SunLine Transit's service area includes many disadvantaged communities including Indio, Coachella, and Mecca. These communities are ranked in the 90-95th percentile for air pollution burden per the CalEnviro Screen 4.0. Therefore, reducing emissions from public transportation in these communities would improve the air quality and minimize the adverse health effects that may result from poor air quality.
Subrecipient activities: SunLine Transit has no sub-recipient with this grant.
