Grant Description
Preventing Alcohol-Related Deaths - The City of Gallup is proposing to address the high number of alcohol-related deaths in Gallup and McKinley County by partnering with the Na’nizhoozhi Center Inc. (NCI) for protective custody social detoxification services.
The City of Gallup Police Department and Public Service Officers will pick up intoxicated individuals that are at risk of self-harm and harm to others and will transport them to the NCI detoxification center. NCI will provide social detoxification services with evaluation, stabilization, and fostering patient readiness for and entry into treatment for alcohol use and other substance use disorders.
Through screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT), clients will receive the Healthy Lifestyles Questionnaire (HLQ) assessment to determine the level of treatment needed. Certified Peer Support Workers (CPSWs) and licensed counselors will assess clients with the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) and Socrates, a readiness assessment.
Behavioral Health Techs, Certified Nurse Assistants (CNA), and nurses will orient clients on the detoxification process. NCI will continue its partnership and referrals system with GIMC for medical treatment, primary care, medical screening, and tests (e.g. HIV and STI testing), and mental health services.
The treatment team will refer clients to Rehoboth McKinley County Christian Health Services (RMCHCS) for opiate, methamphetamine detox or Four Corners Detox Recovery for medical detox and a 30-day residential substance abuse treatment program for people who do not qualify for GIMC.
NCI will also refer clients to Navajo Nation’s 10 Behavioral Health Clinics on the reservation and its own 90-day traditional Native American residential substance abuse treatment program.
