Overview
Grant Description
With the LFPA Plus Award, the tribe plans to partner with local and socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers in order to reduce food insecurity across the 10,922-square-mile reservation area. This program will allow the procurement of local produce and protein sources and establish a direct farmer to consumer market that will encourage production and streamline efficiency of delivering fresh, minimally processed foods to underserved tribal citizens in the food deserts areas.
The tribe will be using the funding of $4,500,000 to purchase foods to distribute among 4,000 households that need food across the 13-county tribal service area. They plan on purchasing 395,000 pounds of minimally processed beef over the two years of the project. The costs projected for this is $10.00 per pound, totaling $3,950,000.00 of total beef purchases for the project.
The tribe will also be purchasing 100,000 pounds of pecans estimated to cost $5.50 per pound. The total amount of pecans over the two-year project period are estimated to be 100,000 pounds. It is estimated the total pecan purchases projected for the project will be $550,000.00.
