AK-2026-026
Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
Application purpose: The Alaska Department of Transportation Public Facilities will receive funding to upgrade the dock infrastructure for ferry terminals in the region.
Activities performed: Auke Bay Ferry Terminal Phase 1 - Dredging: This project will involve dredging to accommodate Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) vessels at the west berth during construction of east berth.
Auke Bay Ferry Terminal Phase 2 - East Berth Mooring Improvements: This project will involve improvements to replace 40 year-old infrastructure including five pile-supported berthing dolphins, replacement of two pile-supported float restraint structures, replacement of pile-supported gangway supports, catwalk and gangway upgrades, and electrical lighting improvements.
Angoon Ferry Terminal Rehabilitation: This project will make modifications to the existing ferry terminal to better accommodate Alaska Class ferry berthing and mooring needs and upgrade the electric apron lifting system to a hydraulic system.
Pelican Ferry Terminal Replacement: This project will make improvements to the existing Pelican Ferry Terminal to accommodate the Alaska Class ferry.
Expected outcomes: 1) Enhanced safety and operability expanding potential hours of operation.
2) State of good repair - maintenance issues will be addressed which will avoid potential critical failure and inoperability.
3) Long term operational viability by meeting updated engineering and vessel requirements.
4) Improved transportation equity by maintaining essential marine access for small remote communities that rely heavily on AMHS for travel and freight.
Intended beneficiaries: Passengers traveling throughout Southeast Alaska as well as freight operators and commercial users who depend on reliable ferry transport.
It also positions AMHS to maintain long-term resilient ferry service by constructing infrastructure that meets future vessel requirements.
The resulting facility will support continued connectivity for rural communities and reinforce vital transportation links across Southeast Alaska.
Subrecipient activities: None.
