Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Application purpose: Modernization of Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) vessels ensuring reliable service improving state of good repair and continuing quality transit service.

AMHS provides year-round scheduled ferry service throughout Southeast and Southwest Alaska extending south to Prince Rupert British Columbia and Bellingham Washington.

Activities performed: Modifications to M/V Tazlina adding sleeping quarters for crew members and other vessel upgrades to improve safety and enhance ridership experience.

Additional work includes the installation of a galley scullery; mess spaces on the upper deck; modify the EGR fuel system; a new fan room on the bridge deck; modifications to the existing passenger dining area; extensions to the existing port stair tower to provide crew access to the bridge deck.

Additional projects include required safety and necessary upgrades to ensure reliable continued marine highway service to rural communities not served by the traditional road system.

Expected outcomes: This benefits the Alaska Marine Highway public transportation system throughout the coast of Alaska.

M/V Tazlina is currently limited to day voyages only.

With the addition of crew quarters, it will enable the vessel to travel farther and be more versatile within the fleet.

This will increase the vessel's ports of call servicing more passengers and communities with limited access to essential goods and medical services.

Intended beneficiaries: Improvements to these vessels benefit all the coastal communities served by the Alaska Marine Highways public transportation system.

This will enhance the ability for residents to have increased access to essential services and for companies to conduct business in remote areas.

Subrecipient activities: None.
