Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The Manzanita Band of Diegueno Mission Indians is undertaking the Manzanita FY2022 Living Languages Project to address the imminent threat to the survival of the Kumeyaay language on the Manzanita Reservation by revitalizing the languages that can be used by a child-bearing generation, but currently are not being transmitted to children.
The project will enable the Manzanita tribal community to achieve the following community language goals, which are designed to build the capacity to revitalize and preserve the language as it is spoken at Manzanita:
(1) Document the Kumeyaay language as it is spoken at Manzanita;
(2) Develop outreach materials to enable the children and adults to learn to speak the Kumeyaay language; and
(3) Teach, assist, and encourage the people to use the Kumeyaay language in face-to-face communication at home and in public gatherings.
All Manzanita tribal members will benefit from this process, which will build the capacity to preserve the Kumeyaay language as it is spoken at Manzanita and increase the ability of the children to grasp and hold essential elements of their culture. Thereby ensuring its continuation, resiliency, and survival.
