Description:
The project will replace an estimated 15 miles of aged and undersized water lines in the service area of Kansas City, Kansas Board of Public Utilities over a four-year period. BPU's aging water infrastructure needs significant updates and replacement to ensure the continued delivery of safe potable water, improved flow characteristics, and to meet all regulatory safety and resiliency guidelines. BPU's water distribution system has over 1000 miles of pipe. The older piping is deteriorating and is part of an aging infrastructure that needs replacement.
Activities:
The project will replace an estimated 15 miles of aged and undersized water lines in the service area of Kansas City, Kansas Board of Public Utilities over a four-year period. The project will be replacing 75 plus year old small diameter water mains that primarily service older, low-income neighborhoods which have been heavily impacted by COVID, helping improve water flow capacity, and reducing the more than 500 leaks and breaks that occur annually in these lines.

Outcomes:
The anticipated deliverables are replacement of an estimated 15 miles of aged and undersized water lines, which are expected to lead to a reduction of main breaks, unaccounted for water, improved hydraulics and fire protection for an estimated 3,500 people.
