Overview
Grant Description
Description: The purpose of this award is to provide funding under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Specifically, the recipient will deploy zero-emissions port equipment and associated infrastructure at the Port of New York and New Jersey, thereby improving air quality and reducing pollution in Newark, NJ, Elizabeth, NJ, Bayonne, NJ, and New York City, NY, and in the surrounding area.
Activities: The activities include the replacement of diesel-powered material handling equipment with battery-electric equipment, the installation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the installation of shore power connections for marine vessels, the replacement of diesel engines on a cement hauler barge with electric power, a voucher incentive program to deploy zero-emissions material handling equipment and associated infrastructure, and a voucher incentive program to deploy zero-emissions drayage trucks.
Subrecipient: The activities implemented through subawards include the replacement of diesel-powered material handling equipment with battery-electric equipment, the installation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the installation of shore power connections for marine vessels, the replacement of diesel engines on a cement hauler barge with electric power, a voucher incentive program to deploy zero-emissions material handling equipment and associated infrastructure, and a voucher incentive program to deploy zero-emissions drayage trucks.
Outcomes: The anticipated deliverables include electric forklifts, electric buses, electric terminal tractors, electric container handlers, electric gantry cranes, electric offroad tractors, electric cement hauler engines, upgraded electrical infrastructure, installed shore power connections, scrapped equipment and engines, and incentives for zero-emissions drayage trucks, material handling equipment, and charging infrastructure.
The expected outcomes include reductions in greenhouse gas and other types of air pollution leading to improved air quality and health benefits, additional longshore and construction jobs, and job training.
The intended beneficiaries include the owners and operators of port equipment, including Port Authority of New York and New Jersey terminal operators, drayage truck operators, and other port tenants.
The communities surrounding port areas, for example in Newark, Elizabeth, Bayonne, and Staten Island, will benefit from reduced air pollution and associated health benefits.
Port workers will benefit from additional jobs and newly acquired skills.
