Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
This project grant supports activities to acquire the Shoreham property, which is an 800-acre parcel of pristine habitat located on Long Island Sound in Wading River, NY. This acquisition will provide water quality, tidal wetland, and coastal habitat protection.
The project grant also supports the Flax Pond habitat restoration project which will remove sediment from its tidal inlet channel to increase tidal flushing, reduce possible hypoxic events, and improve tidal wetland health. Flax Pond is a 146.2-acre state owned property composed of tidal wetland, tidal pond, beach, and coastal forest upland habitat within the Village of Old Field in Suffolk County, NY.
Flax Pond is considered an area rich in ecological diversity and recreational opportunity.
