Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
Description:
This cooperative agreement provides funding to the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) to fund a project to replace transit diesel buses with electric buses. The recipient plans to replace four 40-foot Pittsburgh Regional Transit diesel transit buses with four new 40-foot zero tailpipe emission battery electric buses for operation in Monongahela Valley area in Allegheny County. The project also includes the purchase and installation of two slow electric chargers along with supporting infrastructure in the garage to which the buses would be assigned.
Activities:
This project is a collaboration between the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) and Pittsburgh Regional Transit Authority (PRT; formally known as Port Authority of Allegheny County) and involves replacing four diesel transit buses that currently provide service to the Mon Valley in Allegheny County with four zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) buses. The ZEV buses are anticipated to be purchased and put into service in 2026. Additionally, PRT is to provide general structural and electrical updates to their bus garage as well as installing two slow electric chargers.
Subrecipient:
The proposed budget for this project is $10,000,000 in grant funding. This funding request (including ACHD personnel costs) will be used to fund activities undertaken by ACHD and its project participant partner, PRT, related to the replacement of transit buses, as well as the installation of an electric charging station and associated electrical and structural upgrades.
Outcomes:
The project will reduce emissions of particulate matter PM2.5, especially in environmental justice areas. Outputs include the deployment of four PRT battery electric buses operating in the Mon Valley region, and the upgrading and installation of supporting infrastructure for battery electric buses, and two chargers. Other expected outputs include the quarterly progress reports and a final report delivered in accordance with the grant requirements. Through this project and this grant, PM2.5 emissions will be reduced in the Mon Valley region and throughout Allegheny County, including where several environmental justice communities are located. Operating costs for PRT are also anticipated to be reduced. Intended beneficiaries are the citizens in and surrounding Allegheny County.
