Cooperative Agreement
Overview
Grant Description
This proposal outlines plans that continue the Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Sciences (CPAESS) collaborations with NASA and that consolidate and manage a series of ongoing programs and projects in support of NASA missions and associated science.
Projects and activities support both existing and evolving sustained ocean observing activities in response to science and societal needs. CPAESS will work with NASA to oversee and manage activities and outcomes required to effectively identify and coordinate the ocean observing activities of scientists, engineers, and program managers across the United States and the globe. The focus will be on optimization of NASA's investment in ocean science and observation.
CPAESS proposes a new multi-year cooperative agreement in partnership with NASA for the proposal period of May 1, 2017, through April 30, 2022. In service of NASA's goals for supporting existing and evolving sustained ocean observing activities, CPAESS brings proven expertise in scientific service areas including: 1) large-scale partnerships and initiatives; 2) community-building events management; 3) postdoctoral fellowships, visiting scientist appointments, and internship opportunities.
The proposal provides a hub for ongoing activities and creates synergies by identifying potential opportunities for integration. CPAESS will manage and oversee meetings and projects that foster the coordination of these various activities among NASA partners and across disciplines to form an accurate, systematic sustained ocean observing system from both satellite and in situ observations.
Programs and projects will also foster ocean-observing activities that are multi-use, multi-disciplinary, and represent new understandings of key physical, biogeochemical, and ecological regimes and phenomena. CPAESS will create linkages among appropriate research, intergovernmental, industry, regulatory, and funding agencies to achieve societal objectives through science.
