Cooperative Agreement

Overview

Grant Description
Purpose: The purpose of this cooperative agreement is to advance neutron scattering metrology for research in soft matter science and engineering.

Activities to be performed: Support and develop advanced neutron metrology instrumentation and methods and assist the broader U.S. neutron research community in academia, industry, and government service. Disseminate data and research results; contribute to the next generation of researchers; provide research assistance to NCNR facility users; provide support for project objectives by collaborating with NIST scientists. Enhance the training, education, and outreach activities through direct interaction with U.S. neutron researchers. Projects range from energy research (i.e., characterization of ion transport to support development high-performance solid polymer electrolytes and zeolite-based materials for hydrogen storage) to biopharmaceutical stability.

Expected outcomes: It is anticipated that the work outlined in this proposal will produce significant scientific advancements as well as improvements to the NIST facility by developing, designing, and building new instruments; developing new and improved software interfaces for existing and new instruments; and supporting research activities at the NCNR by advancing the use of neutrons by scientists in academia and industry.

Intended beneficiaries: U.S. scientific community and the general public.

Subrecipient activities: The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
Funding Goals
TO ADVANCE THE RESEARCH OF NCNR USERS AND NIST SCIENTISTS BY: (I) OPERATING NEUTRON INSTRUMENTATION AT THE NCNR; (II) DEVELOPING NEW NEUTRON INSTRUMENTATION AND MEASUREMENT CAPABILITIES AT THE NCNR; (III) CONDUCTING COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH WITH NIST SCIENTISTS AND VISITING RESEARCHERS AT THE NCNR; (IV) BROADLY DISSEMINATING THE RESULTS FROM NEUTRON RESEARCH AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW NEUTRON MEASUREMENT TECHNOLOGIES TO THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY; (V) RESEARCH ON NEUTRON DELIVERY SYSTEMS, SUCH AS COLD SOURCES, BEAMS AND GUIDES, NUCLEAR REACTOR CORE ANALYSIS, OPTIMIZATION, AND METHODOLOGIES TO SUPPORT NOVEL NEUTRON SOURCE CONCEPTS; AND (VI) UNDERTAKING EDUCATION AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES THAT PROMOTE THE USE OF NEUTRONS BY ACADEMIC AND INDUSTRIAL SCIENTISTS AND THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEXT GENERATION OF NEUTRON SCIENTISTS.
