Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The objective of the project is to increase the overall safety of the operation four highway-rail grade crossings on U.S. State Route 50 (River Road) by reducing driver confusion and increasing both awareness and reliability of the signals.
The project will replace the railroad and traffic signal equipment with new equipment that meets or exceeds current safety standards, as well as adds safety features currently not present.
The existing signals are beyond their useful life, no longer function reliably, and do not meet current industry safety standards in terms of equipment or preemption actuation and timing.
This project will implement a design that minimizes the possibility of vehicles, including tanker trucks carrying hazardous materials (which are a high percentage of the traffic volume traversing these tracks), from queuing on the rail lines while waiting for a green light to enter River Road.
The project will result in improved safety conditions for motor vehicles and the railroad owners.
The City of Cincinnati (the Grantee) will complete the following deliverables: a project management plan, a final design package, project easement with Anderson Ferry, and a final performance report.
The project beneficiaries include the Central Railroad of Indiana, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), and CSX Transportation.
