Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
The Susquehanna River Bridge (SRB) replacement project includes final design and construction to replace the current, existing two (2) track bridge with two (2) new fixed, two (2) track bridges for a total of four (4) tracks over the Susquehanna River between Havre de Grace and Perryville, MD.

When complete, the construction of the two bridges will expand capacity, increase reliability, and provide resiliency by allowing two tracks on the east bridge to be fully dedicated to AMTRAK service, while providing two tracks on the west bridge for commuter rail and freight.

The new spans will improve upon the 90-MPH speed on the current structure, with the west bridge designed to 125-MPH operation and the east bridge for up to 160-MPH operation, reducing travel time for thousands of daily passengers along the Northeast Corridor.

Once the new east bridge is operational, the new west bridge would decrease maximum speeds to 100 MPH.

The crossing is used by AMTRAK's intercity services, Maryland Area Rail Commuter (MARC) service, and freight service.

The project will improve state of good repair and provide additional capacity to meet future growth.
