Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The project involves partial reconstruction of Norfolk Southern's Grand River Bridge by replacing the main channel crossing with a ballast-deck steel superstructure.
The project will increase the hydraulic opening of the bridge by removing substructure units and raising the low-chord elevation of the spans some 5 feet or more.
The river frequently transports large accumulations of timber drift, necessitating costly and dangerous efforts to remove the debris in order to relieve the lateral loading against the bridge as well as to eliminate the potential fire hazard.
In extreme events, these drift accumulations have become unmanageable, resulting in structural damage or failure.
The project will reduce or eliminate these issues.
