Overview
Grant Description
The CREATE Project EW3A is dedicated to improving the efficiency of a vital junction in the Chicago terminal by adding track capacity to alleviate freight rail congestion and upgrading signal systems for improved rail safety and efficiency. Through this project, the Illinois Department of Transportation will collaborate with Norfolk Southern Railway to complete final design (90-100 design) and construction of the proposed track, signal, and switching improvements at Pullman Junction.
The CREATE Project EW3A features significant benefits across various domains, including improved safety through reduced crashes and roadway pavement damage resulting from avoided freight diversion, enhanced economic competitiveness with upgraded freight rail infrastructure leading to reduced delays, and greater environmental sustainability with decreased emissions and improved air quality of life. These benefits highlight the project's goal of creating a safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation system for the Chicago region.
