Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The project will construct a new intercity passenger rail station on Amtrak's NHHS rail line in the town of Windsor Locks, CT (town) to replace the existing Amtrak station that is located one mile south near Interstate-91. The new station will be downtown, centrally located, and provide improved accessibility to the residents and businesses in the town.
The project will include a new station building and parking lot serving a full-length high-level boarding platform, all designed in compliance with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). The project also includes improvements to the NHHS rail line to serve the station, including new or realigned mainline track, construction of a second track for use as a station bypass track, and removal of an existing siding track required for the station construction.
In addition, the project includes improvements to the connecting Connecticut Southern Railroad (CSO) Suffield Branch to modify the junction with the NHHS rail line, as well as reconstruction of a segment of the existing siding track for use by CSO. Finally, the project includes improvements to the local roadways to accommodate construction of the new station and railroad improvements. Upon completion of construction and relocation of Amtrak service to the new station, CTDOT will demolish the existing Amtrak station and construct a maintenance-of-way (MOW) yard in its place with an approximately 1,800-foot siding track adjacent to the NHHS rail line.
