Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The project relocates two MARC trainsets from Baltimore Penn Station to Martins Yard to accommodate the repurposing of an existing track at Penn Station for revenue, intercity, and high-speed rail service. This will be achieved by constructing two storage tracks at Martins Yard to accommodate the displaced trainsets currently occupying the future work area at Penn Station.
Through the construction of new storage tracks at Martins Yard, MDOT MTA will make space available to begin construction of the new platform at Baltimore Penn Station. This will also maintain existing MARC Penn Line service levels provide increased seating capacity for two MARC trainsets enable improved rail traffic fluidity through Baltimore Penn Station address crowding on existing MARC Penn Line trains and generate operations and maintenance cost savings.
The improvements will bring Martins Yard into a state of good repair. Reducing train storage at Baltimore Penn Station will expand station capacity and reduce delays from interference between trains, including intercity passenger rail operations, that meet and pass each other in Baltimore, benefiting both Amtrak's intercity Northeast Corridor services and MARC Penn Line commuter services.
