Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The proposed project funds the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT or the grantee) to replace approximately 23.5 miles (MP 490.7 to 514.20) of existing obsolete 85 lb. sectional rail with 115 lb. continuous welded rail (CWR) on the Kyle Railroad Concordia Subdivision between Beloit and Yuma Junction, Kansas (the project).
The project will also replace 7 mainline turnouts, install a new 115 lb. rail crossing in Beloit, rebuild three public grade crossings with concrete surfaces, including underlying crosstie replacement, and rebuild 46 public and private grade crossings with timber plank surfaces, including underlying crosstie replacement. Additionally, the project will include surface alignment and dress to complete the resurfacing of the ballast profile for proper drainage.
The objective of the project is to rehabilitate the Concordia Subdivision to a Class 2 track standard in order to improve safety and reliability of freight rail service to customers north of Beloit. The new rail will allow for an increase in track speed from 10 mph to 25 mph and will support 286,000 lb. freight car weight limits along the subdivision. This upgrade will reduce the risk of track-caused derailments and the incidents of both rail and track structure defects.
