Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The purpose of this award is to complete conceptual engineering, preliminary engineering, and National Environmental Policy Act requirements needed to address infrastructure constraints along the federally designated Pacific Northwest High-Speed Rail corridor between TR Junction in Tacoma, Washington and Dupont, Washington.
The activities to be performed include design work and environmental review for double-tracking approximately 12 miles of single mainline track segments in Pierce County. The expected outcome of double tracking the single-track segments is a reduction in choke points in the rail system, which helps passenger rail, commuter rail, and freight rail service improve on-time performance.
Once constructed, the project will support efforts to increase Amtrak capacity in the Pacific Northwest High-Speed Rail corridor, support extensions of and improve reliability and on-time performance for Sounder commuter trains, improve rail access to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and reduce frequency conflicts between freight and passenger rail along the corridor.
The intended beneficiaries include Sound Transit, Amtrak, freight rail shippers, and the public and customers they serve.
