Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
The purpose of the project is to improve access to intermodal rail services in the region by incorporating a rail intermodal loading unloading facility into the existing East Deerfield Rail Yard and improving the flow of freight into and out of the facility.

The project scope includes the construction of new track infrastructure to enable the loading unloading of intermodal containers from trains within the rail yard, and rehabilitation of existing track infrastructure that supports intermodal freight shipments.

The intended beneficiaries of the project include the East Deerfield Yard operating railroad (CSX B E G W), intermodal freight operators, and the general public through the improvement of freight rail operations and intermodal freight services in Massachusetts and the region.

The improvements are integral to the operation of intermodal rail services for enhanced reliability of rail deliveries involving the use and storage of rail cars in East Deerfield Yard. As a result, trucking as a transportation supplement or alternative to rail is projected to decrease due to improved rail reliability and service options.

In addition, the expanded use of East Deerfield Yard for rail truck intermodal transport will result in greater operating efficiency and sustainability in the safe movement of goods throughout the region by reducing regional truck traffic.
