Grant Description
This funding will provide an opportunity to restore, rebuild, and modernize Amtrak's intercity passenger rail rolling stock, facilities, stations, and infrastructure. Anticipated outcomes include a significant reduction or elimination of state of good repair deficiencies, improved safety and reliability for the traveling public, and setting a foundation for growth of intercity passenger rail as a mode of travel for the next generation.

THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE PROGRAM FUNDED THROUGH THIS AGREEMENT IS FOR THE PURPOSE OF ELIMINATING AMTRAKS DEFERRED MAINTENANCE BACKLOG OF ROLLING STOCK AND FACILITIES AND STATIONS AND INFRASTRUCTURE. THIS WILL SUPPORT AMTRAKS EFFORTS TO MAINTAIN AND IMPROVE SAFE NATIONAL PASSENGER RAIL OPERATIONS AND TO COMPLY WITH ALL SPECIFIED FEDERAL OPERATING REQUIREMENTS AND MANDATES ON THE NATIONAL NETWORK OR NN. THIS INCLUDES SUPPORTING CAPITAL PROJECTS TO ACQUIRE NEW PASSENGER ROLLING STOCK TO REPLACE OBSOLETE PASSENGER EQUIPMENT USED IN AMTRAKS LONG DISTANCE AND STATE SUPPORTED SERVICES AND ASSOCIATED IMPROVEMENT OF FACILITIES USED TO MAINTAIN AND STORE SUCH EQUIPMENT. IT ALSO INCLUDES BRINGING AMTRAK SERVED STATIONS TO FULL COMPLIANCE WITH THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT AND ELIMINATE THE BACKLOG OF DEFERRED CAPITAL WORK ON AMTRAK OWNED RAILROAD ASSETS LOCATED ON THE NN. IT ALSO INCLUDES ELIMINATING THE BACKLOG OF OBSOLETE ASSETS ASSOCIATED WITH AMTRAKS NATIONAL RAIL PASSENGER TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM SUCH AS SYSTEMS FOR RESERVATIONS OR SECURITY OR TRAINING CENTERS OR TECHNOLOGY.
