Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Purpose: The purpose of this grant is to enhance the STEM ecosystem at Pittsburg State University by (1) supporting personnel responsible for the research/education of the students and (2) procuring new scientific instrumentation necessary to carry out cutting-edge research.

Activities to be performed: Of the $5,000,000 requested, $518,587 will be in the form of salaries to pay four positions: Analytical Science Manager, Research Scientist, Lab Manager, and Student Manager.

This funding is requested for one academic year, with PSU assuming funding for those positions after the initial year.

The remainder of the funding is for the procurement of equipment and instrumentation to support STEM education activities and research at PSU to allow the university to be much more competitive in the types of students it draws to campus and much more competitive in the types of research than can be conducted in general education, major fields, and graduate courses.

Expected outcomes: There are several expected outcomes, with the most important being the recruitment and retention of area students.

The equipment will be paired with ongoing renovations (funded by other sources of funding) and will allow PSU to attract and retain students who might otherwise choose a different university to pursue their education.

Other outcomes will be an increase in the quality of the research conducted by undergraduate and graduate students.

The ability of these students to conduct more impactful research will not only benefit them personally but will also increase the pool of high-quality students from which industry in the area can recruit.

Finally, this project will increase the overall quality of the STEM education offered at PSU.

Intended beneficiaries: Funding from this project will benefit the students and faculty of PSU by improving the STEM environment at the university.

These STEM investments at PSU will in turn benefit the local economy by improving the STEM capable workforce that can be recruited and hired.

Subrecipient activities: The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
