Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Purpose: The purpose of this grant is to procure new equipment that will enable the production of new extreme bandgap (EBG) materials on large substrates that are relevant for transfer to large scale manufacturing, and to perform research on the growth of EBG layers on different substrates.

Activities to be performed: A new MOCVD system will be procured and placed within the University of South Carolina Photonics and Microelectronics Laboratory (PML), which will enable the production of EBG AlGaN power electronics devices on 4-inch wafers.

Research will be conducted on the growth of AlGaN materials over AlN substrates to enable control over the deposition process to minimize defects and maximize performance.

Additional research will be conducted on AlGaN materials growth over SiC substrates on 4-in wafers which is necessary for new power electronics device fabrication.

Expected outcomes: These equipment improvements and research will increase the likelihood that new power electronics materials and devices can be translated to large-scale manufacturing.

Intended beneficiaries: Researchers accessing the PML facility will have advanced capabilities available that can be more easily translated into commercial production.

Industry partners will be able to see demonstrations of promising technology earlier than before.

Subrecipient activities: The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
