Grant Description
PURPOSE:THE PURPOSE OF THIS GRANT IS TO PURCHASE HIGH CAPACITY-HIGH PERFORMANCE STRUCTURAL TEST EQUIPMENT TO UPGRADE THE UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS GRADY E. HARVELL CIVIL ENGINEERING RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CENTER (CEREC) TESTING LABORATORY. THESE NEW COMPONENTS WILL SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE THE CAPABILITY AND PERFORMANCE OF THE LAB, ALLOWING ARKANSAS TO TEST LARGER SCALE SPECIMENS AT HIGHER LOADS AND LOADING RATES.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED:THE APPLICATION DESCRIBES THE FACILITY AND PROVIDES A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF NEW COMPONENTS TO BE PURCHASED INCLUDING ONE VERY LARGE CAPACITY (1.0 M LBS.) SERVO-HYDRAULIC ACTUATOR WITH A LONG (40 IN.) STROKE. A NUMBER OF SMALLER CAPACITY LONG STROKE SERVO-HYDRAULIC ACTUATORS ARE IDENTIFIED TO ALLOW TESTING OF SMALLER LABORATORY SCALE SPECIMENS OR SPECIFIC COMPONENT PORTIONS OF LARGER SPECIMENS. IMPROVEMENTS TO THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM IN THE TESTING LAB WILL DOUBLE THE FLOW RATE AVAILABLE IN THE LAB, NECESSARY FOR LARGE STROKE ACTUATORS. CORRESPONDING IMPROVEMENTS TO THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM CONTROLS ALSO ARE IDENTIFIED TO PERMIT ADVANCED HYBRID TESTING PROTOCOLS.A HIGH STIFFNESS, VERY HIGH-CAPACITY COMPRESSION TEST MACHINE (2.2M LBS.) WILL BE ADDED TO THE CEREC TO TEST LARGE COMPONENTS. LASTLY A PHYSICAL MODIFICATION TO THE LABORATORY WILL BE CONDUCTED TO BUILD AN OPERATIONS CONTROL ROOM ON THE SECOND FLOOR OF CEREC. THIS IS COMMON PRACTICE IN LARGER LABORATORIES TO HAVE AN OPS CENTER ABOVE THE TESTING FLOOR.EXPECTED OUTCOMES:THE PROPOSED TESTING COMPONENTS WILL PLACE THE CEREC AMONG THE BEST TESTING LABORATORIES IN THE COUNTRY. THIS GRANT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY EXPAND THE CAPACITY OF THE LAB AND PROVIDE THE PI?S WITH THE CAPABILITY TO COMPETE WITH LARGER SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY FOR SCARCE RESEARCH FUNDING. THE PI?S HAVE A TRACK RECORD OF BEING ABLE TO ATTRACT FUNDING; THIS NEW EQUIPMENT SHOULD GREATLY AID THEM IN THEIR PROPOSAL EFFORTS.INTENDED BENEFICIARIES:LOCAL STUDENTS, BUSINESSES, K12 SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY COLLEGES, AND UNIVERSITIES WILL BENEFIT FROM BEING ABLE TO WITNESS STATE-OF-THE-ART ENGINEERING RESEARCH IN ACTION. THIS RESOURCE WILL PROVIDE SIGNIFICANT BENEFIT TO ENGINEERINGUNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCENATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGYMATERIAL MEASUREMENT LABORATORY100 BUREAU DRIVE, MS 8300GAITHERSBURG, MARYLAND 20899FIRMS, THE STEEL INDUSTRY IN ARKANSAS, THE ARKANSAS DOT AND US ARMY ERDC TO GET LARGE AND COMPLEX SPECIMENS TESTED LOCALLY IN THE STATE.SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES:THE RECIPIENT DOES NOT INTEND TO SUBAWARD FUNDS ONLY TO MAKE EQUIPMENT PURCHASES.
