Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Purpose: The goal of EPBC proposal is to complete the first year of a five-year plan to integrate two quantum computing systems into the network, and the objective for the first year is to develop critical capabilities on quantum machine learning and distributed quantum computing, including staff training.

The proposal includes a description of the experience and expertise of key personnel.

For the purposes of this review, the project goals, objectives, approach, and execution plans are sufficiently clear.

Activities to be performed: Building on earlier development of a commercial quantum networking testbed, the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga (EPBC) Tennessee proposes a 1-yr project that is part of a 5-yr plan to integrate two quantum computing systems into the network.

The goal of the 1-yr project is to build capabilities on quantum machine learning and distributed quantum computing for applications such as optimization of energy distribution and storage.

Proposed activities will contribute to addressing issues identified by the U.S. National Quantum Initiative for the nation to maintain leadership in quantum information science and technology (QIST) and related technologies, most notably the need for infrastructure development and access.

Expected outcomes: Expected impacts will be both internal and external to EPBC.

The project will strengthen internal EPBC quantum capabilities and expertise so that the quantum network testbed is better placed to service the interests of potential end users in industry, academia, and government.

The project will be an asset for economic development in Tennessee, in a critical emerging technology.

For the purposes of this review, the anticipated impacts and outcomes are sufficiently clear.

Intended beneficiaries: The EPB quantum network will provide new opportunities for economic development in Chattanooga and the state of Tennessee, and underserved communities within the state will have access to leading-edge infrastructure.

Subrecipient activities: The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
