Project Grant
Overview
                Grant Description

Purpose: The purpose of this grant is to allow the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) to expand its demonstration testbed in order to assist U.S. manufacturing in transitioning emerging digital manufacturing technologies from laboratory to the factory floor.
Activities to be performed: The team will assess available technologies for wire-arc additive manufacturing and the supporting systems required for digital thread demonstration.
The work will include the coordination of facility modifications and plan for the implementation and set-up of new equipment and support systems.
Researchers and support personnel will be trained to operate the new additive manufacturing systems and associated technologies.
Materials will be provided to baseline the performance of the system through the production of sample artifacts.
A demonstration to produce an artifact and collect data related to its quality will be conducted.
Expected outcomes: The project will allow CCAM to build a cyber-physical, advanced manufacturing testbed built around additive manufacturing.
This will enable local businesses to better connect to the U.S. Defense Industrial Base supply chain and make them more efficient when doing so.
The project will address manufacturing challenges and manufacturing capacity shortfalls in naval shipbuilding and repair including in shortfalls for castings and forgings.
This project will mainstream additive manufacturing in maritime manufacturing supply chains which will lead to significant reductions in manufacturing lead-times for hard-to-source parts, provide the ability to meet aggressive production timelines, reduce reliance on sole-source supply points, and allow for meeting required quality on the schedules needed for military readiness.
The project will also facilitate supply chain growth and digitally enhance process qualification.
Intended beneficiaries: Local and U.S. manufacturing broadly will benefit from the expanded testbed and additional resources.
The U.S. Defense Industrial Base and naval shipbuilding will benefit from the improved manufacturing capabilities of U.S. manufacturers.
Subrecipient activities: The recipient plans to subaward $10,000.00 for site preparation and installation support for wire-arc additive manufacturing unit.
