Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Purpose: The University of Washington is requesting $5,000,000 to purchase laboratory and building equipment for a new interdisciplinary engineering building (IEB).

The IEB is currently under construction.

The facility was started in 2020 and has encountered unprecedented cost escalation due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain and labor issues.

The resulting funding gap between an initial $75.07M project to now $104.3M for full build out threatens to delay student usage of key spaces in the IEB.

These funds will go directly to support necessary furnishings, equipment and associated indirect costs, which will allow students to fully leverage this educational facility upon completion of construction (estimated opening March 2025).

Activities to be performed: The requested support for equipment, technology and furniture for this building will improve the quality of UW’s engineering curriculum while providing increased support for students from all backgrounds to be successful in their engineering education and careers – including supporting outreach to K-12 students exploring engineering.

The UW project manager for the IEB will manage the procurement of furniture and equipment available through a State of Washington contract with Pacific Northwest-based vendors.

The project manager will place orders with the vendors.

The project manager will then work with a team comprised of the contractor and vendors to install the furniture and equipment by floor on a schedule that integrates into the overall construction sequence and workflow.

Expected outcomes: The project will directly support the fulfillment of the objectives of the IEB and will advance and increase access to engineering education at UW by adding new, state-of-the-art spaces for students to learn and collaborate in preparation for engineering careers in the Pacific Northwest.

Intended beneficiaries: This project will support the educational needs of the undergraduate students of UW as well as supporting outreach to Washington’s K-12 students.

The IEB project aims to fuel economic growth and create a pipeline of future, local engineering talent to support the high-tech and manufacturing industries of the Pacific Northwest.

Subrecipient activities: The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
