Grant Description
Purpose: The impact purpose for the new SAWIC building is to provide a state of the art facility for workforce training and research in coldwater aquaculture.
The center is designed to support sustainable economic development, food security, climate resilience and innovation in the aquaculture industry.
It will also foster collaboration with Maine aquaculture entities and rural and Indigenous communities such as the Penobscot Nation.
Activities to be performed: Workforce training, research and development, commercialization, outreach and education, collaboration.
Expected outcomes: Creating a hub for training and innovation, fostering innovation and research, empowering Indigenous communities, increasing accessibility and sustainability, supporting the broader seafood sector and transitioning from traditional fisheries, supporting broodstock development for salmon restoration.
Intended beneficiaries: The expected outcomes of the SAWIC project highlights its transformative potential for Maine's aquaculture sector.
