Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
Purpose: The purpose of the grant is to stand up an advanced steel research center within Arkansas State University at Jonesboro that will be capable of supporting the local steel industry in Arkansas, which is poised to become the largest steel producing state in the US.
It will also benefit local material handling industries and help develop a skilled local workforce capable of supporting these industries and providing good local jobs.
Activities to be performed: The primary activity will be the selection and purchase of the experimental and computation equipment needed to perform state-of-the-art steel research within the center.
Research will be focused on alloy design, alloy fabrication and heat treatment facilities (processing) and property analysis.
The equipment selection will involve representatives of local steel industry, which include NUCOR, US STEEL and others, to ensure the new center meets the needs of these companies.
Expected outcomes: The research center, and associated new metallurgy department within ASU, will provide state-of-the-art research support to the steel industry both locally and nationally and will help create a highly educated local workforce capable of supporting local steel producers and associated material handling industries in Arkansas.
Intended beneficiaries: Local American steel companies and material handling companies will benefit from research and development activities carried out at the new center and the improvement in the local-educated skilled workforce graduating from the Arkansas State University academic programs.
The research will also support steel manufacturing in the United States for those portions of the research that are non-proprietary.
Subrecipient activities: The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
