DIAGNOSTICS FOR EXTREME-LIGHT -THIS AWARD SUPPORTS A MULTI-INSTITUTIONAL, COORDINATED PROGRAM TO DEVELOP CROSS-FACILITY DIAGNOSTICS AND ADVANCED MODELING CAPABILITIES FOR THE MULTI-PETAWATT ERA OF HIGH-INTENSITY LASER SCIENCE. BY MATURING A PORTABLE, FACILITY-READY SUITE OF DIAGNOSTICS AND MODELING TOOLS, THE PROJECT ENSURES THAT FLAGSHIP EXPERIMENTS AT CURRENT AND PLANNED NATIONAL HIGH POWER LASER FACILITIES, INCLUDING THE NSF ZEUS USER FACILITY AND A POTENTIAL FUTURE NSF OPAL USER FACILITY, CAN DELIVER RELIABLE AND QUANTITATIVE RESULTS. IN PARTICULAR, THE DIAGNOSTICS AND MODELING SUITE WILL INCLUDE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE-BASED FEEDBACK CONTROL FOR HIGH POWER LASER PULSE OPTIMIZATION AND WILL ENABLE EXPLORATION OF NEW STRONG-FIELD QUANTUM ELECTRODYNAMICS REGIMES CRUCIAL FOR TESTING THE FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS UNDERPINNING QUANTUM INFORMATION SYSTEMS. THE PROJECT WILL TRAIN A GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE STEM WORKFORCE WITH PAID RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS ACROSS SIX INSTITUTION TO EXPAND THE TALENT PIPELINE FOR NATIONAL SECURITY, SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY, AND HIGH-TECH INDUSTRIES. THE SCIENTIFIC EFFORT IS ORGANIZED INTO SIX COUPLED THRUSTS: FOCAL-SPOT AND INTENSITY METROLOGY USING ELECTRON WAVEFRONT SENSING WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE-BASED FEEDBACK TO DEFORMABLE MIRRORS, PRE-PULSE AND PLASMA-MIRROR CONTROL, VIRTUAL DIAGNOSTICS WITHIN THE OSIRIS PARTICLE-IN-CELL FRAMEWORK, DIAGNOSTICS FOR 10?200 GEV ELECTRONS, HIGH-REPETITION-RATE ELECTRONIC PROTON RADIOGRAPHY, AND BROADBAND X-RAY IMAGING FOR HIGH-ENERGY-DENSITY SCIENCE. THESE THRUSTS ARE DEPLOYED IN A COORDINATED CROSS-FACILITY PROGRAM TO ESTABLISH EXPERIMENTAL READINESS FOR FLAGSHIP CAMPAIGNS IN STRONG-FIELD QUANTUM ELECTRODYNAMICS (SF-QED), DEPHASINGLESS LASER-PLASMA ACCELERATION, AND ULTRAFAST LABORATORY ASTROPHYSICS. BY LINKING LASER PARAMETERS AND TARGET CONDITIONS TO MULTI-MESSENGER OBSERVABLES, THE PROJECT ESTABLISHES A COHERENT FRAMEWORK FOR INTERPRETING EXPERIMENTS IN PREVIOUSLY INACCESSIBLE REGIMES OF RELATIVISTIC PLASMA PHYSICS AND WARM DENSE MATTER. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
