Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The spirit of Mount Spokane-Phase 2A project has been prioritized in response to the urgent threat of forestland conversion within Idaho's Panhandle priority landscape area.
Private forestlands in Bonner and Kootenai County face increasing development pressure, risking the loss of valuable public resources such as sustainable timber production, wildlife habitat, and recreational access.
The project advances the Forest Legacy Program's objective of protecting environmentally important forests by acquiring conservation easements that prevent non-forest use conversion.
This need is supported by Idaho's Forest Action Plan, which designates the project area as critical for protecting working forestlands that support Idaho's timber industry.
By securing 6,504 acres in this phase (and 33,469 acres total across all phases), the project safeguards national and state-level public values including threatened species habitat, scenic vistas, and working forests.
The purpose of this grant is to protect these high-value forestlands in perpetuity, ensuring long-term environmental, economic, and social benefits through collaborative, voluntary conservation.
