Project Title: Residency in Education, Teaching, and Instruction in Nursing (RETAIN)

Summary of Grant Purpose and Employment and Training Activities Offered:
The purpose of this grant is to increase the numbers of academically trained nurse faculty and clinical instructors in rural and urban underserved areas of Northern California. Working with partner organizations, finalize the design of RETAIN and establish the grant infrastructure. We will recruit 20 nurses to participate in a 12-month limited term, fully benefitted faculty position as Nurse Faculty Residents (NFRs). The NFRs will spend 50% of their time completing a graduate degree and 50% co-teaching with a mentor and completing a Graduate Academic Certificate (GAC) in education. The grant will pay salaries, some support services, and $50,000 toward tuition for each participant. An additional 48 nurses will participate in a 6-month Clinical Instructor Internship (CI2). They will also complete portions of the GAC, be mentored by an experienced clinical instructor, and paid a stipend. Upon program completion, all will be eligible to sit for one of the National League for Nursing CNE certification exams.
