Grant Description
Executive Summary
The Maryland Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism (GOSV) is proud to present this package of seven continuation applications for the Corporation for National and Community Service's (CNCS) 2018 AmeriCorps State and National Grant Competition. These programs will engage 366.17 MSYs, invest $1.7 million in federal AmeriCorps funds, and leverage $3.5 million in state and local funds in Maryland communities.
This package is the result of extensive application review and refinement conducted by the GOSV staff and the members of the Maryland Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism (GCOSV) between September 11, 2017, and January 16, 2018. Together, these programs will address CNCS priorities in the areas of addressing the opioid and prescription drug abuse crisis, academic achievement for students in two of the lowest performing school districts in Maryland (Baltimore City and Prince George's County), environmental stewardship, capacity building for nonprofit service agencies, health and nutrition services for youth, and more.
These applications represent programs that will serve every corner of the state and engage diverse AmeriCorps members and local volunteers in tackling the most critical human and environmental needs of Maryland communities. They will also provide transformational AmeriCorps service experiences and significant organizational development for host site partner agencies.
Each of the seven continuation programs has a strong track record and meets or exceeds CNCS-required annual funding match levels for the AmeriCorps grants. From the research-based, trauma-informed strategies of our new targeted priority programs, HopeCorps and COAT, to the statewide reach of the Maryland Conservation Corps and Volunteer Maryland, to the targeted community development work of Civic Works, and the innovative approaches to improving student achievement and engagement of Reading Partners and Teach for America, these programs provide innovative solutions that engage hundreds of local community partners, public officials, and funders, and thousands of community volunteers.
With the breadth of the issues addressed, these programs will also impact the health of communities and citizens beyond Maryland's borders (e.g. Chesapeake Bay watershed, professional volunteer management, environmental stewardship, green energy, organic and sustainable farming, and more).
